Pebblestep her ears swiveled neatly along her head. It had been a long time since she had been out in the hunting grounds to hunt. but, she had to admit, she loved the feel of the moorland under her paws. as she traveled across, her head was held high, ears lifted and flicking one way or another in case something tried to find it's way past her. soon enough, a small gray pelt whizzed out from some kind of hole and tripped over her paws. how convenient..her mind purred as she clicked into hunting mode and was soon racing after the creature, her body in full sprint and paws hardly touching the ground. not too long into the hunt, the mouse was between her paws and all she had to do was knock it to the side and and give it a swift bite to it's spine, killing it pretty much instantly.
A purr of her own triumph and scratched a bit of the earth over it, pausing to taste the air again. Being one of the most successful hunters, it would be pretty pathetic if she showed back to the clan with one tiny field mouse, her hunt would have to go much further. and on such a nice day, she had nothing to complain about. twitching her ears, she slunk carefully across the moor, her tail lifted neatly off the ground and bright green eyes flicking from side to side as she tried to find something worthy of her clan. a little white later, she saw it, a plump rabbit nibbling at some kind of plant on the ground. the wind was in her favor, though she always enjoyed the thrill of the chase when it came to rabbits. they tested her speed and her agility, giving the hunt much more of a fun chase. a light hiss from her throat sent the rabbit on the move, and she could here her brother now. 'stop playing with your food pebblestep, it's meant to be killed quickly and eaten.' but the calico she cat had never listened, yes they were meant to be eaten, but why not have a little fun in the process?
she gave the rabbit a bit of a head start then threw her hind paws back and sprinted after it. the more was mostly clear aside from a few bushes and holes that the calico found herself leaping over and bounding as fast as she could to try and clear before the rabbit got too far from her grip. after a few moments she was panting, but she couldn't give up now, she almost had it. just as the rabbit was about to dive into it's hole, pebblestep managed to knock it to the side with a well trained orange paw. the rabbit stumbled, but took off in the opposite direction before the she cat could make her kill. she growled in protest but followed quickly, her legs beginning to tire. but this time, after whizzing around for what felt like forever, the calico knocked the rabbit off balance and snapped it's neck with a clean bite before it could escape.
easing to a stop, she stood there for a while, panting heavy breaths as her sides heaved from the chase. but even so, there was a gleam of excitement hidden in those bright green eyes. whether it was a hard chase or not, in the end, she was the one with the kill in her paws. a purr found itself in her throat as she picked up the rabbit, carrying it back to where she had buried the little mouse. at least now, it was a decent catch that the elders would be pleased with.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
the wind was gentle that day, cool and crisp, but overall refreshing. sunshine filled the ground below, warming it nicely in contrast to the breeze and so all in all it was a rather fine day. fine was something ashenflight would have used to explain it anyway. some cats may go to the extent of calling it wonderful... magical... beautiful even. but to ashenflight it was just fine. there was nothing special about the state of the weather, it either rained or the sun shown this time of year. sometimes the wind could be a little rough, but all in all in this vast moorland it was exactly what any hillclanner would ask for. and for ashenflight, it was fine. nothing more.
a single gray tabby prowled through set of pushes, consealed almost completely by the greenary which was - admitedly - a little strange. a part of him wondered how treeclan could do it - live in permanent isolation of the world underneath the canopy. but to each their own. ashenflight was usually a very solitary cat - okay, he was a solitary cat - that spend his time hunting and thinking out on these moors. as far away from the small pond and the wandering eyes at camp as he could. the tom had never been one for interaction between his clan-mates. his entire family had been that way for awhile. rabbitwind, doveheart, and lambfur. all of them stayed rather close and while the invitation was always there for ashenflight he had declined. at least, that was until rockstep came along. then the invitation was met a little less begrudgingly and there were even a few times where a laugh could be pulled from the straight face of the tabby. but eventually with the death of rockstep and a lover brought the death of the happiness inside ashenflight.
yet no one had truly known about rockstep. the two toms had kept it hidden in every way. not even the mate or kits of rockstep knew and as far as ashenflight was concerned it would stay that way. the she-cat had loved rockstep so dearly that he could not be the one to taint that image of her mate and the kits had been raised so well by the tom in question that he just could not break that perfect image of their father. it would not be fair to anyone. especially not to them. so instead ashenflight withdrew again - from his family and his clanmates. instead he flung himself into the things that had brought him and rockstep closer - hunting mainly. the pond was still too secret for him to visit. it was where rockstep had drawn ashenflight from his shell. where they'd fallen in love. where they'd trained and bonded. and without rockstep there now it was too painful - filled with too many memories.
the sound of scurrying reminded ashenflight what he was doing - withdrawing him quickly from the fond memory he had been reliving. the white rabbit he had stalked was suddenly alerted by a light hiss and instantly irritation flooded his veins. though when the rabbit took off there was no sign of a cat chasing it and as the gray tabby flung himself from the bushes he narrowly escaped the calico cat that had it's sights set on the rabbit now. the scent was of hillclan but it did not seem to make the irritation in his muscles lessen or the need to put the she-cat into her place any lighter. so instead he watched as the rabbit was chased across the moors, nearly lost, played with, and finally killed. he rolled his eyes. oh wonderful. prima donna playing with her food. he thought bitterly to himself and stretched his muscles, green eyes glistening as he watched her pad back this way. the tom fell in step beside her and casually glanced toward the dead rabbit.
"you know, if you spent as much time hunting as you did playing with your food, you'd actually make a difference in hillclan." though the words were harsh it was not exactly the words that could be considered the worst part but rather the way he said them. his voice came off as condesending, could have easily been considered rude and maybe that was what he wanted. most cats that knew of ashenflight were aware that he did not usually play wel with others. @pebblestep - ### - told you i'd steal it. rabbitwind

Pebblestep The calico was faintly aware of the presence coming in beside her, but it took her quite a long moment to react to it. The second she did, the tom spat some sharp words at her and she instantly recoiled from her excitement, her mouth opened with the pleasant greeting that had been ripped away. swallowing the words, she flinched at the tone, but quickly caught herself and let out a low growl. she wasn't really one to argue with a situation, but right now, her hunt was none of this cats business. and his tone was only making it worse. "it doesn't appear that you are too high up in it either." She spat back, her voice a low hiss of annoyance. with that done, she tightened her grip around the mouse and rabbit and quickened her pace, trying her best to get away from the grumpy tom.
even as she walked off, she was almost positive his eyes were on her, and she did not like it. if he did happen to try and keep up, she dropped the kills and swung her body in a quick motion, her fur bristling in annoyance. "Back off, my business has nothing to do with you." another low growl and she picked up her kills and once again, took off, this time her pace more of a quick lope than a walk. Her ears were pinned tight against her head, all her excitement to bring the kills to the elders had vanished, along with the thrill of the hunt. Now she was just flat out irritated. who did this tom think he was, coming up to her and telling her she meant nothing to this clan? it wasn't his place. only snowfire had the right to tell her what she was doing was wrong, and this cat was the total opposite of snowfire, giving her the urge to have nothing to do with him.
as she walked on, her tail flicked just at the tip, showing her aggravation. the light in her pretty green eyes had faded and now she was more focused on getting back to the camp and bringing these kills to where the belonged so that she could get something of her own to eat. that was if she could shake this tom from her tail and her business.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
proud tabby tom only seemed to lift his head a little higher at her recoil this words. it left him with a chuckle that sounded deep in his throat as she stalked away after attempting to jab at his ego. though it did little good and ashenflight was careful to make sure that she was aware of just how ineffective her remarks were. the tom did not slow his paw steps or avert them and instead continued right along behind her. but did not speak - at least not yet. they padded along in silence for a few moments before the irritation seemed to sink deep within the fem as she spun to face him and instantly the brute produced a sort of ... smile.
"Oh calm down, kit. I'm not going to harm you." He insisted with another mrrw of amusement before padding along still. her speed increased and his did too - a brisk walk was more than enough for the larger tom to keep pace with her. "come now kit, has it ever occured to you that if you've got to defend your actions that there may be something wrong with them?" His question was merely a rhetorical one and did not require any answer but instead slowed to a halt as she picked up her prey as if to head back to camp. "leaving so soon? those will hardly feed anyone back at camp. but hey, if you want to let your day be wasted by some tom who has nothing to do with your business then fine. let it. the world will be a cruel place for you then, kit."
he was only three moos her senior but something about her... aura made him feel like he was addressing a kit. one who had not quite worked out the way of the world. the way it could be cold, unforgiving and take everything you loved if you let it. ashenflight had worked it out long ago - the easiest way to avoid losing what you loved was to not love. love was a complicated emotion and it was not something he bothered himself with anymore. the tabby tom flashed another smile - somewhat kinder than the previous one. he could imagine the fem probably felt very uncomfortable in his presence but if she had half an idea of how safe she was ... well that was a secret for another time.
"Come on, kit. let's go get some more hunting done. the queens need more than that to eat." he waited for an answer, knowing full well that if he turned his tail he would either have a claw coming for him from behind or a she-cat bounding back to camp and crying about her mishap with the cruel, mean, and nasty ashenflight. then rabbitwind would hear about it ... oh god knew that was the last thing ashenflight wanted. rabbitwind would scold him about being kinder, he would do something to make him realize the error of his ways - or at least try. for some damn reason, rabbitwind had it in his mind that he had to save his brother. but ashenflight didn't need saving. @pebblestep - 529 - meh. he's a dick.

Pebblestep the whole way back to camp the tom kept up with her, she had a feeling she knew who he was, but at the same time she didn't want to. As she sped up to get away from the rude comments, she only seemed to get them harsher. once they reached the camp walls, she had had enough, but too much to fight back. instead, her shoulders sagged with her defeat and she cast him a glare from above her mouthful of prey. something about the way he kept calling her a kit made her stomach turn and want to lash out. but she didn't. Instead, she dropped her kills on the pile. "they were for the elders. i'm going back out." she remarked quietly, flicking an ear at his statement about going to get more prey. "and stop calling me kit." was her final statement as she rose back to her paws and tossed her head, indicated for him to lead them out.
she could tell by the way he looked at her he thought of her as a kit, but by the looks of his fur and the gleam in his eyes, he wasn't much older. the only difference was pebblestep had never lost the bump in her step and the fun in her heart. she was a kit at heart, and if that seemed to urk this tom the wrong way, well too bad for him. it wasn't like every cat was going to like her, and she wasn't going to sit around and whine because of it. she might as well learn to tolerate him and get on with her life. As the tom turned to lead the way, she realized who he was, now that she was actually looking at him. she knew him as Ashenflight. not that she really knew him. they only passed stares and awkward conversation. and now, i not so pleasant hunting trip.
back out in the hunting grounds, the calico felt her heart lift and the spirit of the forest filling her. she held her head and tail higher, her green eyes shining. and for a few moments, she forgot about the grumpy, ashenflight beside her and focused on the sights. the ground began to open back into the moorland and she felt the urge to run and roll and just be who she really was. but, the second she felt her stride pick up and her paws bounce, she remembered who she was with and quickly contained it, slowing her pace back and slinking behind the tom, ears bending back slightly. whenever they reached their destination, pebblestep lowered her haunches and plopped herself a few paces away from the tabby tom. "Let's see what a great purpose you are to the clan." she meowed, her tone having a sarcastic taste about it, though there was a mischievous gleam in those shining, green eyes and a low purr in her throat.
Even his grumpy attitude wasn't going to ruin her excitement of another hunt.
