great clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above.
no one knew his inner most thoughts, not many more then he thought he did as well. no his thoughts were his own and locked under so much of his own emotions that he rather think them something akin to pesky things that were not worth his time. so, the young tom lifted his head from his nest, sleeping alongside his friend, skypaw, he dare not awake her since he had to rise so early. with a gentle tug of himself, tigerpaw pulled himself from the younger she-cat and out into the early morning air. the morning was crisp - with the tell-all signs of newleaf bringing it's weary head towards the newly formed clans, tigerpaw felt that empty feeling of what would become of his family he had formed only a few moons before finding tree and her pack.
he remembered when tree ruled the pack - and then clan. she ruled with her strength and he had even grudgingly respected her enough to agree he needed more training and he would become an apprentice. what he didn't expect was for her to give him to her son - the deputy - and have the nerve to say that while he would challenge tigerpaw; tigerpaw would challenge him. that much was for sure. up until his first training session, things had moved smoothly between the two tom; they didn't get along, but they also didn't spite each other for the sake of spiting, they simply got on with their business and behind closed trees; tigerpaw would pant and try to catch his breath while hiding from hid mentor easily.
but then pinewhisker had turned and started the battle training and in less then five minutes tigerpaw had been shoved to his back. when he was told to rise once more after that; he got up and went back to his fight - and suddenly tigerpaw could feel his chest tightening, his whole body tensing as he struggled to breath. he could remember having to struggle through the glassy eyes and tighten throat as he gasped for the air that couldn't make it into his lung. that had been the final fall out between the two and life had been tougher for the young tom as he struggled to keep up.
no, now he stood outside the apprentice's den wondering if he should chance it by out running his mentor to the training hollow they used. with little thought otherwise; tigerpaw took off towards the entrance of the clan and into the forest with ease. his paws were steady, his breathing even - in, out, in in, out - and with each breath he felt his heart beginning to race. he was going to beat pinewhisker there; he was going to show him that even with this shortness of breath he had inhabiting his chest that he was a strong cat and could be made a warrior! 'I'll show you, you moron!' he thought bitterly as his paws slipped into the golden hallow.
"aha! first f," he wheezed suddenly, chest heaving before he took a gulp of air. "for once!" he meowed in a breathless tone, but his heart was soaring in that moment. with a determined glare around the clearing he waited for his mentor to appear, or to arrive - he wasn't certain yet.

pinewhisker tonight i stop the fire, tonight, i break away. break away from everybody. break away from everything. if you can't stand the way the place is. take yourself to higher places. at night, i feel like a vampire. it's not right but i just can't give it up. i'll try to get myself higher, let's go. we're gonna light it up. tonight we start the fire. tonight, we break away! break away from everybody. ♠ ♠ ♠
♠ ♠ ♠ Pinewhisker was (by no contest) the least popular cat in his clan. Not that he noticed, as his ego was usually so big and filled him so full with compliments that he often did not hear the criticism and hateful words of other cats. In some ways it was good because that was often a fault of most cats. They let the opinions of others get so far into their head and allow it to inhibit them from doing what they needed to do - were meant to do - to survive. All that being said, Pinewhisker awakened with a smirk on his face. It was early, very early, but he did not want to remove himself from his moss bedding quite yet. So instead the tom merely laid their, occasionally grooming a piece of his coat that did not quite lay the way he wanted it to. It was not until an red glow began to develop outside his den that he stirred from his resting state and he exited the den before stretching his muscles and breathing in a big breath of fresh air.
♠ ♠ ♠ The tom cast a glance toward the sky and lazily pulled the corners of his lips into a smile. It was time to go train Tigerpaw. Pinewhisker was not a fan of his mother's choice to assign the weak apprentice to him. Honestly, he had never been a fan of apprentices though when it was explained that it was required of him, well he begrudgingly took on the task and worked this apprentice to the bone. If asked, Pinewhisker would say he was fond of his apprentice, though it was a lie to be given through clenched teeth as any cat that knew of their training sessions knew he loathed the cat more than anything he'd ever encountered. While there were certain aspects that even he had to admit were admirable about his apprentice, he would never have said it aloud. The brown tabby stretched his limbs a final time before padding from camp. He was in no hurry to get to the clearing, it was still early.
♠ ♠ ♠ Pinewhisker reached the golden hollow with time to spare and carefully ascended a tree near by. Pinewhisker loved trees, loved to be up high, above everyone else (both in a physical and metaphorical sense). The russet colored tabby laid across one of the branches, tail carefully tucked next to him beside the branch. It was several minutes before his apprentice came bolting into the clearing, wheezing from his run. The older tom shook his head sadly. What a pathetic little creature you are, Tigerpaw. He scolded inwardly before rising to his paws. He heard the cat's excitement about being first to the clearing and let out a chuckle, loud enough to be heard from above. If you want to be first to the clearing, you have to wake up much earlier than that, Tigerpaw. He said with an even tone, though his eyes shone with the truth - that it would never happen because Pinewhisker was too determined to let it happen. He needed the control, wanted the control. He wanted to be able to take Tigerpaw and break him down to nothing more than a mindless machine. And he didn't care how long it would take.
♠ ♠ ♠ The tom leaped from the tree, landing on his paws with a soft thump before his apprentice. The leader was not a large cat, more muscular than tall and so must cats stood above him, but that was okay. He didn't mind having a little bit of surprise on his side. Stand up straight, Tigerpaw. And stop that infernal wheezing. You'll be the first target for any target at a battle if you are standing there trying to catch your breath. He snapped, golden eyes rather cold as his voice became almost monotonous. You will need to learn to control that... whatever that is at some point in time. If you don't, you will be of no use to my clan.

great clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above.
no. his wheezing grew louder when he heard that chuckle and he whirled around to find the leader of his clan on the ground. his mention of awakening earlier nearly tore into tigerpaw. he knew if he woke up and earlier he would fail - he would always fail. no pinewhisker was just a ruthless as tigerpaw was with the rest of the world and he had little thought as to exactly why tree had placed him with her heir... her son. teeth flashing in annoyance the younger tom stood with his wheezing heavy and thick in the air around them. he would not fall to pinewhisker's harshness, no - tigerpaw had been cut from the same rock as this tom, but for tigerpaw his portion had been rattled and drilled so full of holes that he wondered if he would last long in this world. probably not, but who are you to judge what those cats think. smoke said you'll live enough. with his head held high, he listened as the tom spoke to him once more.
"stand up straight, tigerpaw. and stop that infernal wheezing. you'll be the first target for any target at a battle if you are standing there trying to catch your breath." no, he knew this as well as any cat who had come to know him and as his tail lashed he straighten up; pushing his chest out and drinking in long deep breaths as they calmed and eased the ache of his lungs. with a flare of his nose he felt the anger boil in him as the other tom spoke again; "you will need to learn to control that... whatever that is at some point in time. if you don't, you will be of no use to my clan." his eyes blew wide in anger as he rose to all fours; eyes narrowed at the tom before him. you will need to respect others if you want them to do shit for you. there, he said it with as much disguise and annoyance as his tiny body could muster.
he knew his little body; smaller then pinewhisker's but still growing, if only a little bit more; had endured a hell of a lot more pain and suffering then his had. he did not have to worry if his next breath would be his last; or if he would drown in his own. it was no doubting from the obvious first look that tigerpaw held the markings of a true warrior. he had muscles; sure enough but nothing that could carry him into a lasting fight. no. he knew exactly his way to fight off others and with his head raised high and his teeth bared, tigerpaw meowed in an annoyed and clearly frustrated tone. a target i may be, but who is to say i won't kill the enemy with a different form of.... method. the way his lips curled up, seemed to hint at a more sinister manner. With a roll of his eyes he shrugged his shoulder and stood with his head held high.
then again, why would i disclose that information with someone who readily sees me as a foe rather then an ally. pity, and i had thought you great. he meowed with a tone laced with almost a cruel note. he didn't know why, but it had always got his blood pumping to mix concoctions together - though he would never tell the cats around him; oh no they would cast him out. but that cruel smile upon his lips dipped away as he stood and rolled his eyes. get on with the training, you're wasting my time as much as yours.

♠ ♠ ♠ The older tom looked upon his apprentice with his golden eyes, careful not to speak for several long moments. Instead he allowed the younger tom to catch his breath and allow the words that the great leader of TreeClan had just spoken. The tom flicked his tail slowly back and forth before padding away from his apprentices, muscles relaxed. There was very little in this world that could break the concentration of Pinewhisker when he had made up his mind. Strangely, Pinewhisker had no temper to worry about. If - on the off chance that he did get angry - there was usually hell to pay. But even Tigerpaw's rude words could not affect him and he merely turned to face his apprentice with his tail held high. Tigerpaw, it has become evident to me that in your time with me you have become anything but a respectable apprentice. You are rude to everyone, including your mentor and leader. I will not tolerate a cat with such a negative outlook affecting the rest of my clan. If we have to have this conversation again I can guarantee it will be your last as a member of this clan.
♠ ♠ ♠ Would he really do that to his own apprentice? Well honestly, yes. Yes he would. He had to look at what was best for the clan and having a cat that could do nothing for anyone, could say nothing to anyone without getting defensive and snippy would be useless in his clan. With those words said, the leader paces back toward his apprentice, pawsteps slower than they had been before. A different method? Well Tigerpaw, as unlikely as it is that someone as useless as yourself would be able to come up with any other method, humor me. What do you intend to do if a warrior sees you wheezing in the middle of a battle and attacks you? Please I'm sure I would absolutely love to see the tactics you have been hiding all these moons. The tom let out a mrrow of amusement before raising his head and standing a little bit taller than before. Pinewhisker didn't do well with disrespect and so it was part of the reason why he had fallen so susceptible to the cat's little snide remarks. Every little thing his dear apprentice said made the leader want to run him from the clan and insist he never return.
♠ ♠ ♠ There was a long pause in the conversation after the apprentices' next words. While his gaze remained cold and calculative it was his posture that gave away his irritation. The way his muscles grew rigid and his tail slowly flicked back and forth across the ground. There was a soft rustling sound of his tail against the ground and he hoped that Tigerpaw realized how much of a mistake he had just made. Tigerpaw, for today we will be heading to the HillClan border where the trees end. We will be working on fighting techniques and exercises that even you could not mess up. It is a little pathetic that I have to dumb it down for you, you know. You are older than most of the apprentices all ready and are still just as incapable as most of the new apprentices. Pinewhisker turned abruptly and walked toward the HillClan border, knowing full well that Tigerpaw would follow. This tom had a lot to lose if he left this clan - his brother and a small she-cat he had found in his earlier moons.
♠ ♠ ♠ As they neared the clearing, Pinewhisker slowed to a halt and turned to face his apprentice and began to speak. If I didn't have to teach you manners along the way; I am confident we would have been done a moon ago and you would be an acceptable warrior. Sadly, you seem no more capable of being a warrior as you do an apprentice. My own kits have better manners than you and they are only six moons old. So you will spend the rest of the day out here, running and practicing your agility. You will spend the rest of the day learning to control that infernal breathing of yours. And once that is done, I may consider continuing your training. Give me any more lip and you can count on the next two moons being in the elder's den taking care of Tree or in the nursery helping the queens instead of training.

♠ ♠ ♠ Pinewhisker had to stifle a smile. Truthfully? Tigerpaw reminded him a lot of himself. Tigerpaw would make a good warrior, he just needed to control that temper of his. But Pinewhisker would never let that on as it would show him as weak. And that wasn't something the great leader was. Instead he looked at his apprentice with a calm and even gaze for several long moments. When he finally spoke, his voice was again cool, calm, and collected. "What is the sense in that statement? Are you aware that most cats believe that in order to show respect they must be shown respect? Where does that leave a middle ground? If two are battling for each other's respect and butting heads the whole time, all it leads to it bruises and bitter feelings." The toms words could almost be considered gentle. But not so much so that Tigerpaw should have let down his guard, merely something for him to ponder.
♠ ♠ ♠ Regardless of the tom's comment, Pinewhisker seemed rather at ease with the response. He knew there was nothing the cat could say that would surprise him. And low and behold his apprentice's secret weapon was poison. How original. The older tom looked at him with a slight apprehension in his eyes, but hid it well with false interest. "All right, so let us say this method of yours was to work, assuming you knew what you were doing. I haven't the faintest idea if you do; but how would you get a cat to eat it if this was the first time you had met them on the battle field and they were charging straight at you?" He didn't leave room for answer but instead explained where they were going and trotted patiently toward the HillClan border. Pinewhisker held his head high, uncertain of what he would teach his apprentice anymore. The younger tom was so opinionated and thick skulled (which was something that did not surprise Pinewhisker considering how much Tigerpaw seemed to be like him ), so much so that he often forgot to stop and think about the practicality of his intentions.
♠ ♠ ♠ The older tom as his apprentice spoke, but instead of attempting to respond; he merely flicked his tail and dipped his head, waiting. The babble that his apprentice spoke before he turned and trotted off, Pinewhisker let roll around for several moments. He contemplated it for several long moments, knowing full well what this prey would do if it were fed the seeds and knowing that it would potentially lead to a danger if he were not careful. So he decided against playing upon Tigerpaw's wishes and instead flicked his tail back and forth against the forest floor, sweeping leaves back and forth with his tail. The rustling sound brought him some comfort but he forced himself to stop, ears pricking forward. He instead listened for the change of breathing in Tigerpaw that he knew would happen if his apprentice did not monitor his breathing.
♠ ♠ ♠ But when the apprentice joined him again, it would seem his breathing was a little better than last time. Not completely because his words came out gasped and in syllables, but it was much better than it usually was. "Acceptable." He commented lightly, though his eyes flashed with an emotion of pride within his apprentice. Tigerpaw had come a long way since the wheezing little tom he had been given months ago. Maybe he had what it would take to become a warrior after all. "All right." The older tabby raised himself to his paws and padded toward the younger tom. "If you were attacking from the offense with a larger cat, what stance would you use before striking?"

♣ ♣ ♣ there was never a chance in a million moons that tigerpaw would ever look upon pinewhisker and think; he's a tom i wanna be. no, tigerpaw would rather have a broken paw from falling from a bloody tree then be pinewhisker. what is the sense in that statement? are you aware that most cats believe that in order to show respect they must be shown respect? where does that leave a middle ground? if two are battling for each other's respect and butting heads the whole time, all it leads to is bruises and bitter feelings. tigerpaw's nose flared; while the words had not been laced with anger and hate - they had been laced with a gentle tone, one that the young tom went rigid from - he could not let pinewhisker win in his head. if he let the tom in, all that tigerpaw was would crumble to his leader's wants and needs. no, he would hold firm - be sharp and rude, as always.
♣ ♣ ♣ he had wanted his mentor to yowl at him; tell him it was dangerous to call him a murderer, to curl his lips and banish him from the clan. something, but he had gotten nothing! all right, so let us say this method of yours was to work, assuming you knew what you were doing. i haven't the faintest idea if you do; but how would you get a cat to eat it if this was the first time you had met them on the battle field and they were charing straight at you? his eyes seemed to become alive with a fire of anger, something that he wanted to rip his claws along the older tom's bloody flank. tigerpaw could imagine it though; dropping a splendid catch at pinewhisker's paws, watching the tom take it and bit into it - his whole body racking for air as his mouth filled with his own blood - no, do not fall into the trap of complete control. there was a harshness in his thoughts as he followed his mentor.
♣ ♣ ♣ acceptable tigerpaw wasn't about to let that go, because that i did better then you're letting on bull shitting grin grew on his face. all right, if you were attacking from the offense with a larger cat, what stance would you use before striking? tigerpaw looked up as his mentor padded forward and every part of his thought pattern locked away; a part of him wanted to calculate the exact measurement of nightshade and honey he would need for that rabbit later, but his form had gone rigid his breath hushed under even his own silence and as he waited his muscles tensed more so. the forepaw strike. you rush and then slice your claws across their face - however other techniques such as the teeth grip can work as well. he was quiet but confident, teeth bared as if he was ready to rush the tom before him.

♠ ♠ ♠ Pinewhisker let out a small sigh at the amount of persistence that Tigerpaw insisted on showing. Now sure, he had been the same way when he was that age - he wanted to know everything, thought he knew everything but in reality, knew nothing at all. He had been down that road at least once before - actually more than once - and he wouldn't let Tigerpaw down it without a fight. He's all ready there, you know. His own voice flooded his head and his eyes hardened for a minute but he hid it well and instead pushed onward. The two did not speak again - not even a murmur and that was surprisingly okay with the older tom. He let out a soft sigh and sat on his haunches, observing.
♠ ♠ ♠ After the running, Tigerpaw explained of the technique that he wanted to know about. The leader slowly nodded his head but did not speak this time - as he had not forgotten that cheeky grin he'd received for praising the apprentice last time. "All right. That's right. Now show me." Pinewhisker rose to his paws and padded away from the apprentice and stood across the clearing, his tail flicking back and forth slowly. He waited with his muscles tensed, prepared to counter. Wondering if today would be the day that Tigerpaw would surprise Pinewhisker the way he wanted him to. Wondering if today would be the day that Tigerpaw would prove his worth to TreeClan or if all this training really was exactly what he thought it was - a waste.
♠ ♠ ♠ Pinewhisker didn't like coming across to his apprentice like this. It wasn't that Pinewhisker necessarily disliked his apprentice so much as he disliked the disrespect he received from his apprentice. If that makes any sense. He puffed out his chest with a deep breath and let it out his nose. His ears swiveled forward and he lowered himself into a defense crouch, signalling he was ready for the sparring to begin. He was careful to keep his claws sheathed - at least for now. It wasn't like he needed to be explain to the rest of the clan why Tigerpaw had a huge claw mark along his face or stomach or something stupid. Another deep breath was drawn in before he let it out with a brisk sigh. No longer amused. "Get on with it, kid."

DEAD STAR SHINE light up the sky
♣ ♣ ♣ pinewhisker, 0000, words.
♣ ♣ ♣ all right. that's right. now show me. a part of tigerpaw tensed up against those words - in his own world he had dreamed of the ways he could win a fight, words were his strength, blunt and harsh things that sliced through their enemy like claws against flesh. his eyes watched his mentor, a paw shifting to follow his mentor and attack from behind - but that is not how warriors fight, they fight with honor. his mind cautioned him and he settled back, watching his mentor with clear amber eyes, cautious of any movement that would fix him off. it was when pinewisker had readied himself, did tigerpaw sit back himself, a smirk growing up his face, watching and observing the tom - trying to figure out if he should go for what his mentor wanted him to learn or to go against it and try something else. be un-expecting, be unpredictable, you do not want your enemy to learn your ways and therefore overpower you. his mind hissed, the loner in his heart screamed as him to deny his leader's teaching and go for what he had always known. run or fight.
♣ ♣ ♣ words could not explain what ran through his mind - get on with it, kid. but he knew his leader and mentor was growing impatient. just a little longer, tigerpaw - get him mad, get his mind clouded, don't underestimate him though, he will leave you full of claw marks. there was a portion of him that swore to the heavens above that he would get to be a warrior before his mentor put the death blow on him. muscles relaxed and that cocky grin on his face the tom made no move yet; not a single movement as his eyes scanned the enemy and with that lax smile vanishing in a instant, a hard look passed over the usually annoying and grouchy tom. amber eyes turned hot and flickered across the clearing pondering if he should attempt the move his brother had tried so hard to teach him from a young age. he rose to his paws then, slowly, take a step back, then another and finally one more before he looked down, to wards his chest, before lifting those amber eyes to glance at his leader - a smirk drawing across his lips.
♣ ♣ ♣ with little more then a hint of his muscles moving, the tabby brown tom lifted that head of his and those amber eyes burned with a fire that he had known laid within him - but was not certain his leader had seen before. with a sudden charge, legs carrying him over the ground that they had separated themselves from, the tom made to slice at the tom's face - when he came to a sudden halt, forepaws spinning him a 180 on the ground, hind legs swinging - had he had claws unsheathed the claws could of sank into the enemies face. but with his attack, it would be paws against face if pinewhisker did not leap back. regardless of it, the younger tom smirked from his paw-stand before rolling forward away from his mentor, spinning for the counter-attack. a pant heavy on his breath, but eyes alight with the thirst for a fight, you will be a target on the battle field. but tigerpaw did not care. let them come - I hold no honor.
i'm all out of breath my WALLS ARE CLOSING IN

i'm looking for purpose, you're still looking for light
tabby fur rustled as the stance changed. legs spread apart slightly to adjust the weight of the tom evenly between them. tail curled and uncurled itself behind the hind right leg. brilliant yellow eyes narrowed to near slits as the cat stood, awaiting the attack. in part with all the pushing it should have come to no surprise that tigerpaw chose a dirty way of fighting. normally the rust colored tabby would have condoned any cat he say using this kind of style but for some it was all that could be used. in part he was certain that tigerpaw was one of those cats.
his thoughts did not stay on tigerpaw for very long as pinewhisker thought to himself about his own training. he remembered those days with his father. rabbitfoot was an unforgiving mentor. he was cold and harsh even though the cats he trained where his own flesh and blood. but it had been what had first inspired pinewhisker to become better - to become great. it was what made him the strong cat he was today.
as the paws neared his perfected face the tom ducked just in time, muscles rippling beneath that glorious pelt as he moved to hook the tom's paws and bring him crashing to the ground. but the tom was just a little to fast and rolled away - out of harms reach. when the apprentice turned to look upon mentor Pinewhisker had to hide his approval in his eyes and forced the smile that tugged loosely at the corners of his lips down with a scowl. no sound came forward - at least not at first. he merely watched his opponent before making the counter attack. his paws raced forward - directly toward tigerpaw.
he leaped quickly around the tom before reaching forward, attempting to hook his fore paw around the hind paw of Tigerpaw and quite literally sweep it out from under his body. and for good measure, his face sprung forward toward the tom's tail, jaws snapping shut. all pinewhisker needed was the cat off his feet and that was exactly what he would do. one way or another - no matter how long he was out here sparing. he would put tigerpaw back in his damn place.
when the assault was done, he straightened himself and looked upon his apprentice. a comment fresh on his lips. tigerpaw - 393 - i am sorry, i was trying not to babble.

crawl on my belly till the sun goes downas the sun beat down upon their backs felt air where face should of been and in his hurry to escape the on slaughter that would surely follow his daring and dirty move, the tom rolled forward whiskers just feeling the air as it was disturbed by a swipe that would of knocked him clear off his fore-paws. wide yellow eyes turned to regard the leader with a cocky grin before the two seemed to stare at each other - and if the younger feline did not know better it seemed as if time had slowed; each beat of his heart was fresh in his ears and the deep pants of his breath were loud and deep, a struggle between his own lungs and his chest. no honor, no honor! the voice in his head chanted as his eyes locked in on the target before him, he felt his muscles tense preparing to move from the attack. his body twisting to dodge the attack it became apparent that the other tom had two things on his side; strength and speed for tigerpaw hind leg had been taught by the paw and the male feline did the only thing he knew how to, he rolled.
no honor! his mind screamed, as his quite literally slipped through the other tom's shutting jaws, and with his crouch growing lower to the ground the younger tom prowled three feet from his mentor, breath harsh and his eyes blown wide with adrenaline. from his crouched state the tom's smirk grew bolder, if he had cover from the trees he could of brought down an attack from the sky, but out in the open he only had his wits and his inability to keep his breathing even. he knew that in time he would either fall at the paws of pinewhisker - or he would collapse himself from his breathing - both were not options in his book and with a look of utter determination and anger the tom began his assault once more. 'no honor, not duty, you are a nomadic cat at heart! show them!' his voice screamed within it's caged mind, each word ringing in his ears as his tail lashed about like a whip - anger boiling in his blood and eyes flashing violently.
do it, go for it. a voice taunted and with a growl emerging from his throat the tom backed up, a wheeze still noted in his breathing, but with each careful step back, the tom's eyes were fixed solely on pinewhisker's face; utter determination and anger flicking behind his own amber eyes poured towards the older cat and as he stood now fifteen feet from the other cat his tail lashed - and he yowled a battle cry so loud that even his ears didn't believe it to be his own. leg stretching to their max, the tom charged, claws becoming unsheathed as he propelled himself by digging into the earth and pushing himself forward. with each stride he could feel his lungs protesting; his face must of feel into desperation for air, his eyes shinning with the need for air, but the stubbornness to not give up and as he neared his mentor he made to leap, but dove for the tom's fore-leafs, hoping to bite and swing himself under the tom's belly and drag his paw along it.
he remembered that move well, when he had used it once before - on a loner that had attacked and won against his honorable brother. tiger as he had been named then had charged the tom like he had done now and when his teeth had locked on that feline's leg he and swung himself just so that his claws sank into the underbelly and the cracking of the fore-paw could be heard. but he knew his mentor enough that he knew the tom would not fall for such a trick. lionpelt had been the honorable one, had always been and would always be - and with his loud mouth he had spoken of a few of tigerpaw's dirty tricks; it was likely why most apprentices didn't want to go up against him - either that or they pitied his breathing habits. but should pinewhisker had jumped out of the way on time, tigerpaw would of came to a rolling heap. (choose his outcome, if you want say pinewhisker kicked him in the gut or something ;])

i'm looking for purpose, you're still looking for light
tabby pelt quivered as a twitch of a muscle in the hackles of the feline showed the irritation that was beginning to seep through. yellow orbs displayed no such anger. no satisifaction could be given - not even the slightest ounce of anger could be shown. it would give tigerpaw too much control; something pinewhisker was reluctant to reliquinish. it came of no surprise when tigerpaw slipped from his grasp - only just barely. the muscles in the jaw of the older cat clenched tightly and no words sounded. instead the dance began over again. eyes stared, feet prowled them gracefully apart. tigerpaw seemed to be creating space while pinewhisker danced gracefully behind him to eliminate it. though it seemed that tigerpaw was persistant and in a seconds notice the apprentice was farther than pinewhisker had intended him to be. a fierce battlecry sounded through the air and had pinewhisker not seen it only seconds before there would have been responable doubt that it had come from young tigerpaw.
the cat charged, full throttle, toward the mentor. lack of oxygen could be seen clearly on the younger tom's face and in his eyes but there was that determination that pinewhisker had wanted to see all along. muscles tensed as the apprentice grew closer and it was only in the last couple of seconds that pinewhisker remembered to move. the paw that was aimed for his leg caught his side and claws sliced along his flank but the pain was not there. at least not yet. pinewhisker spun on his apprentice; claw's drawn and teeth exposed in a snarl. it was not a pleasant sound by any means, those that did not know pinewhisker may have actually feared his temper - but it was all an act. sort of. the muscles rippled underneath his pelt as he leaped at the younger tom, aiming to hook his claws against the shoulder of the young tabby and jaws parting before snapping at the back. but then he landed on other side of the apprentice, shook out his fur and looked at him with the unshowing yellow eyes again as though they were at the beginning of training once more.
crimson leaked into his pelt and the longer he watched the more he felt the pain slowly beinning to radiate through the wound but did not let it play on his face or in his eyes. instead, he simply looked at his apprentice with unforgiving eyes and shook his head. "you still show no desire to be a proper warrior. we will for-go your evaluation this moon. you are not ready." without so much as another word, pinewhisker turned and padded away from the apprentice and instead walked across the clearing. haunches lowered to the ground and he sat with his tail curled carefully around his feet. "now..." he said in a slow voice as if he were mulling over what to say next. "we will go patrol the borders. after that you will be done training. then you can go hunt for the queens."

crawl on my belly till the sun goes downthe assault happened before he could predict it. where tiger had thought he would win, where he had thought he would be able to slice the cat from tip to tip he had only managed to knick his claws into the tom's flesh something he had realized all to late as he finally came to a rolling halt finding his mentor on the other side of him looking as if he had won the battle, when in his own mind tigerpaw felt the victory wash over him. he had made the tom angry - fake or real, it had filtered in for a moment, and whether tigerpaw cared to notice or not, he wanted this from his mentor. the harsh orders, the belittling ways - it gave him strength to be who he was and not bow to the other tom. he felt those amber eyes look upon him and in another life he would of wished those eyes to look at him with great pride - but he did not care for much now. no, he had wanted to defeat the tom, to show him how he fought and for that there was no honor, no way of the warrior lying in his heart.
he was a cold blooded killer in so many ways.
he spoke then, pinewhisker - with no such emotion upon him. eyes as unforgiving as ever. you still show no desire to be a proper warrior. we will for-go your evaluation this moon. you are not ready. he stood, his breath was heavy, his chest a heaving mess, but he was not about to lose the battle - the war was still on, a few battles had already been lost to him. now... no, do not dare speak more, his eyes flashing like the fire that burn in his stomach. there was no doubt that he could fight given his chance, but for the cat he was - a warrior was not evil, a warrior did not fight to kill - but he was unable to do this - unable to be proper. we will go patrol the borders. after that you will b done training. then you can go hunt for the queens. those orders, thought carefully and delivered with such a way that caused the younger cat's fur to bristle. no, do not fall. his mind would whisper.
"no."
the word wasn't whispered, and although he did not remember it slipping through his mouth, he said it anyways. his eyes were wide and determined. "no." he meowed again, voice harder and stronger - lips of his furry muzzle drawn into a straight line as he stood taller; breath coming in short bursts but not as bad as earlier that morning. "proper!" his voice was harsh, cold and filled with a anger that boiled deep in his soul. "you ask me to prove that i can fight and yet when i show you, you deem it not proper!" he felt his voice hitch up in his rage. his tail lashed behind him, as he stepped forward, claws sheathed for once and as he glared up at his leader and mentor he meowed; "but i am not fighting treeclan! i am fighting the other clans - so what if i fight dirty. would you rather them fear us because of our fighting style or think us a cowards for playing it by the book." he stepped away from his mentor, eyes narrowed as he remembered his orders.
"i don't care, i'll be an apprentice forever. it'll just look bad on you." his voice had grow before hollowing out, whiskers twitching with annoyance before he lifted his head. "lead the way, pinewhisker. i'm so delighted to learn how to be a proper warrior from a tom who can't even train his apprentice right." with his eyes narrowed and voice falling into a pit of emptiness, tigerpaw lost his look of determination and with a huff, he waited for his mentor to move on.

it came to no surprise that the tom did not look at all enthused with the disrespect that sounded from his apprentice. the older tom simply stood there, unable to speak for hew knew if he did that a certain rage would come out. It took several minutes before he finally felt calm enough to speak. "i do not recall asking if you wanted to, tigerpaw. this is simply what must be done to ensure that you are ready to become a real warrior. a warrior does not need to kill to win a battle. it may happen, but if that is what you must rely on to when you are a poor warrior indeed." He said in a soft voice. it could have almost been considered kind, somewhat caring had it not been for the fact that pinewhisker wanted nothing more than to rip the tom's fur from his body one patch at a time. but he remained cool and collected and instead stood watching his apprentice.
"that is enough for the day. go back to camp, sleep off your attitude, do whatever you please. tomorrow, be here bright and early. you've still got much to learn." The voice he used was firm, not suggesting but rather demanding and without another word pinewhisker shook his head and turned away from his apprentice. he padded away from the tom, but not into the direction of camp but rather deeper into the forest. tigerpaw was a destructive force and would need to be dealt with as such. though it was not the anger and destruction that scared him the most. it was the recognition of a terrible thing. the stories of tigerstar were fresh in pinewhisker's mind and if there were a single cat that he had to guess could follow in any footsteps close to those, it would have been tigerpaw himself.
i won't let him. he has the means to be great but must work for it. not matter how long it takes. no matter what the warriors say. if tigerpaw wishes to be a warrior, this is the way it must be.

TIGERPAW
"I do not recall asking if you wanted to, tigerpaw. this is simply what must be done to ensure that you are ready to become a real warrior. a warrior does not need to kill to win a battle. it may happen, but if that is what you must rely on to when you are a poor warrior indeed."
he was stuck in his position, standing as tall and proud as he could possibly be, and yet his jaw was slack with shock. the voice that carried such a message was not one he had bee used to hearing and only after a few long moments of silence, of being rendered speechless the younger of the two cats felt something snag in his chest, like a cat had pushed his paws deep into tigerpaw's own flesh and chest, to yank at the already cold heart that lay below him. a proper warrior. when will you understand pinewhisker, I can never be a proper warrior. I'm not hit for this world. there was a haunting around his ears as he stepped back, away from his mentor.
"that is enough for the day. go back to camp, sleep off you attitude, do whatever you please. tomorrow, be here bright and early. you've still got much to learn."
away from the cat who was supposed to teach him the ropes. it felt like these ropes were laid around tigerpaw's shoulders, heavy and hard to carry and as he struggled to breath beneath them he came to realize it wasn't because of his own breathing problem because his mentor was choking him, killing the precious time he had left and yet with that demanding voice of his mentor, he froze in his place head bowing to a new dangerous low. I can prove it to him. do whatever you please, he says then I shall. lifting his head, the young tom moved slowly after his mentor, his eyes cautious for once, ready to see the on slaughter of his leader be brought down on him. I will never be a proper warrior, but I can try. he mused silently before dodging off from his mentor's path, if only for a moment.
for a moment he cursed his own mind - his own ambitious until he wrapped the sticky substance around his tail as he had seen that feline do so many times before, and then he charged. paws hard against the earth before he picked up his mentor's trail once more. I can be useful! he heard a yowl in his ears, his own not spoken to the world around him, but within the walls of his mind. as if from behind the door in his head, there was a cat who needed to escape, but for the moment, tigerpaw set on his task. paws moving quickly he only caught sight of his mentor's tail before he shouted with such annoyance and anger that he felt his own insides burst with a furry that could only settle in the pit of his stomach before he would march.
"pinewhisker, stop walking away from me."
it was a demanding voice, something he learned from the older tom himself. there were a few times the younger cat would listen, and in those times he would struggle to pick up everything the other had to offer. just like in the early days, when a small part of tigerpaw yearned to be approved by the tom, he had never expected for him to be shoved so violently to the side and casted as nothing more then a useless cat whose own life was a burden to not only himself, but the cats around him. I'm no use here. I should of left when I had the chance. his mind whispered and for the briefs of moments he wanted to run, wanted to flee and it was clear on his face before he steeled it away, a grumpy look - the look of an elder - crossed his face.
"let me at least put some bloody cobwebs on that scratch. can't have you dying before you make me into a proper warrior."
it was by far the closest the younger tom had gotten to joking with anyone, and if it was something to prove; it was. he had been a rude and nasty cat when he had arrived in treeclan, and that was likely to never change. but the young tom had an ambition and a true passion to be what he wanted to be. he had the bravery, the raw action to throw himself in front of another cat to protect them if and when the time comes. he knew his fate, he knew it so well that it was burned into the back of his skull like a memory; like a reminder. "do you honestly think i am that much of an idiot that i do not realize this problem within my chest? it will cost me much more then your clan - it will cost me my life. i thought showing up to these bloody training sessions was enough to prove my loyalty."
"I've never been proper, so don't get your hopes up. I don't want to kill anyone either, moron. when will anyone believe me."
there was a harshness to his tone, as if a million pounds of weight had been dropped onto his broad shoulders. he knew his life, he knew it far better then he knew anything else. his brother had always had it good, their parents had been proud of lion, but they hadn't liked tiger much. he was a burden and if not killing his brother was proof enough, then he didn't know what else was. he knew somewhere deep down he'd die for his clan, somewhere buried so far down that he had yet to discover it, but he knew if asked to he would place his life on the line for treeclan. he would walk away if they asked him too.
"this chest problem... my breathing, it'll kill me - and If I can't defend myself against this, how can I be expected to defend a clan. how can I be that proper warrior when I'm struggling. tell me pinewhisker, what will it take to show you and everyone else that I am trying!"
he has half hissed, half yowled that last word, his own inner anger burning so hot that he nearly turned from his mentor then, but he offered his tail of cobwebs instead. as if offering a peace offering, something he was never good at, nor would probably every be.
"at least let me do something I'm good at."
