Pebblestep the soft sand on her paws felt awkward, it was her first time really being out this way. But, she had come out with a purpose. her mind was once again, lingering the past, her head full of distant, yet painful memories. she was always so careful not to let her clanmates see her like this. as she paced along the small lakes shore, the calicos ears were pinned tightly to her head, her tail dragging the ground. It was obvious that she wasn't hunting, there was a sad aurora about her that just seemed to linger. it was making her feel sick to her stomach. when she felt her legs couldn't hold her anymore, she laid down beside the lake, her nose just gently touching it. the apprentices wouldn't be out today, they were out most likely hunting or well..anywhere but here, the calico would have scented them by now. and even if they did come, she had time to straighten up and look more mature, more like an adult.
overall, she wasn't much of a mentor anyway, that was probably why snowfire hadn't given her an apprentice, he had seen it too. she was always lost in her head, and though she was smart and tactical, she was just weird to the clan. she always had been. that explained why she knew two cats - her brother, and the meanest cat of the clan - the one who had caught her "playing with her food" a bad habit. Well not really bad, the she cat just preferred to have a little more fun with hunting, some cats just were too closed minded to see that. as she stared down into her green eyed reflection, she studied the colorful patches of color on her face. the peacefulness of the moment reminded her of Cloudstrike, a stunning white tom that she had grown up with, even loved. the two were planning to become mates when they were older, only to have him killed by a fox, slipping through her paws like water. a muffled whining sound and she squeezed her eyes shut. she had been the curious warrior that begged him to take her out to check for foxes.
she was convinced it was empty, but the family must have moved back in over night, she was too excited to check the scents, she just barreled in like the newly made, young warrior she was. when the mother fox chased her out, fur hot with the vixens breath and pebblesteps blood, cloudstrike raced to her rescue, only to be killed by the father of the family. pebblestep wasn't even able to bring back his body, the foxes wouldn't let her close enough. and even after the clan took proper time to plan the way to get rid of them, by then the toms body was gone. he didn't even get to go on his first patrol or hunt as a warrior...because of me... the thought was harsh on the she cats mind and another muffled cry rippled from her throat. Things could have been different, it was all her fault. she had been the reason for his death. a final mournful cry and she flopped her head back onto her paws, eyes closed. something had to give eventually.

Today had been going relatively well for Rabbitwind. Mainly because he had no nightmares this morning, which was an extremely rare occurence for the young warrior. He had just returned to camp to drop off two plump rabbits, but was still eager to get back into the territory. Rabbitwind hadn't been assigned with much to do today, and he decided to give Pitchpaw the day off. Once he finished his duties, the rest was up to him. He might as well make the best of it. The white warrior decided that it would be best to avoid Ashenflight today - he wasn't really in the mood to deal with him. He'd much rather roam the moors and find someone else to talk to. Someone new.
Of course, his swift paws took him to the sandy shore as usual. Except this time, he wasn't the first one there. Pebblestep was. Rabbitwind wasn't very familiar with her. Of course they shared the brief hello and good morning like every clan cat, but nothing more than that. It's not like Rabbitwind was avoiding speaking to her, he'd just never taken the opportunity. And now, he would.
With the confidence that came with a good day, Rabbitwind strolled his way onto the beach, feeling the wet sand sink between the pads of his paws. He always loved that feeling. It was weird. Maybe it was because he came here so often to clear his mind that it just came as a calming feeling. He shrugged, answering his own thoughts. He greeted his clan-mate with a friendly smile. "Good morning, Pebblestep" he meowed coolly, standing next to her. The long warrior looked out into the pond and couldn't help but keep on smiling. He loved this place so much. It was just a great place to be. He could sit here all day and watch the events of mother nature unfold.
Rabbitwind was feeling oddly sentimental today. This caused him to blurt out a plethora of random, idle thoughts. "I love this place. It always makes me feel better when I have a bad day" he meowed, almost in a whisper. His voice quivered a bit as he went on. "I could sit here all day and watch" he looked to her and gave an awkward smile. He didn't know what he was saying, but it all just felt right at the time. "Sometimes, a few ducks fly down here and bob their head under water for fish" he added, continuing to blab on and on. "Maybe CreekClan cats can do that, too" he gave an awkward laugh but didn't take his gaze away from the pond. Rabbitwind was sorta done talking. He hadn't really realized how much he'd said until just now. He paused and let out a deep breath. What would Pebblestep think? It's not like he was being awkwardly deep or emotional, he was just spewing random information. Yet the same question returned to his mind - what would Pebblestep think?

Pebblestep the scent of another cat flickered into the she cats nose and she was about to pounce up when she realized it was a cat from hillclan. that subdued her emotion for a moment, but she still shook away her sadness and pretended she was just fine - like always. that's what she always needed to do. find a peaceful spot, then push it all back down for another day. it seemed to be a habit. but then again, she couldn't say she minded this cats company. now she could see his light coat and recognized the scent as rabbitwind. she couldn't consider him her friend, but they weren't off on a bad foot like her and ashenflight had. she had a strong feeling that the tabby already disliked her, and that was the last thing the calico had wanted.
but hey, who was she to pass up the opportunity to make friends? from how it seemed she really needed them. the calico pulled herself to her paws just as the tom approached and offered her a friendly greeting. pebblestep let out a light purr "afternoon, rabbitwind." She smiled lightly, flicking an ear before casting her gaze back down at the water. rabbitwind seemed to need the company, as he began to talk about anything and everything. the she cat found herself purring lightly at his remarks and nodding to his statement about a good place to be on a bad day. "I understand that, it's my go to place, too." she murmured, casting a brief, green eyed gaze on the tom. she wasn't one to hold eye contact, she much preferred less..well contact. she wasn't insecure, just careful. being too close made her feel awkward, or more so scared. ever since cloudstrike she was afraid of losing another loved one, and she just couldn't take that. not again.
the thought though, was quickly dropped as she listened to rabbitwind talking about how ducks catch fish by bobbing their heads in the water. pebblestep had to laugh at that, a purr of amusement rang in her throat and she shook her head - obviously amused and enjoying his statement. "the day i see a creekclan cat try and fish like that, i will have to try and keep my mouth shut." she laughed, her ears twitching once again as she watched the light colored cats reflection in the water. "so what brings you to here today? bad day? or just enjoying the weather?" her voice was soft and sweet, her eyes briefly traveling to the toms once again before flickering back to the water.

Rabbitwind always seemed to find a way to surprise himself. He had half expected Pebblestep to be weirded out by his openness, but she wasn't. She seemed to reply in a good way, and was open back. Rabbitwind liked that. It was just the way he was and he wasn't planning on changing that, even though it could eventually backfire on him.. He'd learned that from Ashenflight. Rabbitwind forced himself to forget about Ashenflight as he heard Pebblestep begin to talk. He began to space out and only focus on the conversation, trying his best to forget about the past.
"i understand that, it's my go to place, too."
Rabbitwind gave a nervous smile and nodded as he looked out into the pond. Such a calming place. "Surprised I haven't seen you here," he meowed happily. "I come here almost every morning" explained the white warrior, giving an honest shrug. It was true. He needed a place to keep him calm, but then again, so did everyone else. Cats would go insane without that. Well, at least Rabbitwind would. He knew that all too well with the nightmares of every night. But thankfully they had started to fade, and slowly became less and less vivid. He'd actually managed to get some decent sleep lately. Then, his thoughts were interrupted again once Pebblestep replied.
"so what brings you to here today? bad day? or just enjoying the weather?"
The swift warrior froze. He really didn't know what he was doing. What had brought him here? He couldn't remember. He was just here and so was Pebblestep. It wasn't like they planned this. Rabbitwind laughed awkwardly and nodded at her comment about Creekclan cats. "I'm just out for the nice weather, I suppose" meowed Rabbitwind, lying. He didn't know why he was out here, still. But then again, why was Pebblestep here? That was a good question. So, that would be his next. He was eager to get the questions off of him, anyways. He didn't like that. "And yourself? What brings you here?" | |
