ashenflight turn the lights down low, walk these walls alone. we can feel so far from so close. like ships in the night, you just keep passing me by just wasting time, trying to prove whose right. and if it all comes crashing into the sea, if it's just you and me trying to find the light, like ships in the night. keep passing me by. keep passing me by. like ships in the night. ♦ ♦ ♦
♦ ♦ ♦ Each step brought him a little closer to that place and a little farther from camp. He'd never been all that fond of companionship and even now, after several moons, Ashenflight still only searched for darkness. He searched for the shadows that could conceal him and the black that would swallow him hole. Usually it was actually easier feeling that blackness washing over him. It meant he could - at least for one more day - hide his feelings from everyone and everything. Ashenflight had trouble opening up to the ones around him. That much everyone knew, but they would never know why. Deep down he felt like maybe someone would understand but every time he worked up that courage to do it, to tell someone, he cowered and ran the other way. The walls would come up and any sign of weakness was gone. All that was there was Ashenflight, a physical form. No words could describe how he felt or how he was pained. Especially without Rockstep. Every time his name raced across that dark mind, Ashenflight felt his heart clench tight and he had to stop whatever he was doing for a few long moments and just think. He had to work to push the handsome gray tom back into the corner of his mind that had been dedicated to just him. It was hard, but it had to be this way.
♦ ♦ ♦ The tom's steps had slowed to a halt and while his intentions were on hunting... well he just wasn't feeling it anymore. Ashenflight had all but given up going to the sandy shore. Every piece of it reminded him of his mentor and he could not bare to go there without feeling the most intense feeling of heartbreak. Most cat's didn't know that Ashenflight was capable of such emotion, but mostly because he was afraid of showing it. Who wouldn't be when everything you had once cared for was based off a lie and morally wrong? The gray cat sighed deeply and pushed himself forward, away from camp, out across the moors. Maybe he should have hunted... it could take his mind off of everything and after all, it wasn't like the clan didn't need it. So with a deep breath, he lowered himself into a crouch and tasted the air. He could smell rabbits and mice and could hear their steps along the ground around him. The tom remained hidden in the grass, attempting to conceal himself from his prey. Ashenflight sniffed for several long moments before shifting his stance. He moved into a better crouch, paws becoming ready and tail slowly twitching back and forth. Then he began the prowl toward the rabbit he had scented. The little brown and gray creature was nibbling on a patch of clover, it's ears alert. Sadly, the cat's distracted state was just what the rabbit needed and the tom accidentally kicked over a pebble while stalking forward. The rabbit froze, turned and then raced off.
♦ ♦ ♦ And Ashenflight tore after it. He was built for running, but not so much as Rabbitwind was. His brother could still out race him, but he was the only one. Literally the only one. His paw steps were soft against the grassy, rocky field and while he pounded after the rabbit it was clear that his balance was slowly slipping. Not only physically but also mentally. Ashenflight tried to focus but each step became more disoriented and he tripped, hard, over the root of a shrub. The cat let out a vicious snarl when he landed face first on the ground and merely laid there. He didn't want to get back up right now. For once in his life, he wanted to be the one to fall and not get back up. He wanted someone else to pick him up. But that wasn't an option for him. So for a few minutes, he would just lay here, on the ground with his face slammed into the rocks and dirt. And he would close his eyes and pretend that everything would be okay for once. That Rockstep was still here, that they were still together. That everyone knew about them, that they were happy. For once he just wanted to pretend. Then he would go on tomorrow like nothing had changed. Just for today.

The nightmares were slowly fading away. As every night passed, the badger became weaker. Like usual, the badger would still catch them at the tree... but this time, Rabbitwind could escape. He could make it back to camp and save his sister in time. The badger didn't have a chance anymore. Ashenflight alongside two more warriors would take down the badger, and drag Doveheart back to camp. Rabbitwind couldn't help the curious thought of his brother being haunted. Did he have these nightmares, too? Or more importantly, did Doveheart? At least the horror had gone from it. There was no more killing of the mentor, or even Rabbitwind for that matter. The nightmare had became the reality of the memory, no longer something fake. It would take a while, but progress was everything.
Rabbitwind hadn't been sleeping. He wasn't very tired, anyways. The sleek tom had spent most of his day at the shore, watching the subtle waves of the pond. That was the only place he felt safe. Well, the moors too. But that was just his place to let out energy.. To run free... because if he wasn't running, he was either at the shore or going insane. There seemed to be no in between. Right now, he was spending his time at the beach. He just couldn't seem to focus. He had so much energy. His front right paw sat tapping up and down on the sand beneath him. He needed to run. There was only one place to go.
The wind of the moors repeatedly whipped into his cream-colored fur. If he wasn't Hillclan, he'd probably be in pain. Most cats weren't built for this windy terrain; but luckily for Rabbitwind, he was born on it. This was like his home. He felt safer here on the moors than he did in his own camp! And it made sense.. Well, to him at least. The only cats he could trust was his family. He didn't even know the other Hillclanners.. They were all just random loners. Just like he used to be. It confused him immensely why they would all unite under one name. He would have been fine if he had just stayed with his family. Hell, they would probably still have Dad around, too. Yet, Rabbitwind wasn't going to pretend like that bothered him, because honestly, it didn't. He had never known the guy well enough. He was so young when they had came to Hillclan. He didn't know how much his siblings were affected by it either.. Most importantly Lambfur. How could she bare it? The fact that her mate hadn't loved her enough to stay.. That had pained him more than his fathers leaving ever would. They didn't need that deadbeat... What had he ever done for them? He stayed until he saw the opportunity to leave. Well, maybe that's just how Rabbitwind saw it. Frustrated with himself, the slim cat took off along the moors.
The slim warriors long legs pounded through Hillclan territory, hopping over rabbit-holes and through small bushes. He had been thinking too much. Typical Rabbitwind. He didn't plan on stopping his run for awhile. He was feeling good. Just like his siblings, he had been built for running. No, he had been built on the moors. A product of them. More importantly, a product of his ancestors. It was truly a blessing. As the warrior continued to run.. He noticed something. Something that brought him to slow down. Actually, something that made him stop completely. Was that...? Just, slumped there? Laying by himself? What in the world was he doing? Confusion had taken over his thought filled mind. Was that actually? Ashenflight!
Well, he wasn't dead. That's for sure. As Rabbitwind sped up to him, he could see his fur move with every breath. So, it was Ashenflight. Just laying alone.. All by himself, with his face smashed into the dirt. Rabbitwind played a bit of a joke in his mind; was that actually comfortable to him? Was he enjoying that? He kept that to himself, though, he knew his brother wasn't much of one for joking. Rabbitwind extended one small white paw and poked his brother near his neck. A few, curious words escaped his cream-colored maw. "Brother.. What exactly are you doing?"

♦ ♦ ♦ As he laid there, part of his consciousness slipped away. Not in the sense that he had passed out, but rather, day-dreaming. It was a luxury that Ashenflight did not allow himself very often and when he did, it was not like this. But now, he just allowed his mind to wander, eyes to remain closed, and relaxation to soak through his muscles. It was almost like meditation - if he knew what that meant, he was certain he would call it that - in the way his breathing slowed and muscles relaxed to a soft putty. It was how he felt laying beside Rockstep most night. There it was, his name. As soon as it trotted across his mind, his muscles tightened and he drew in a sharp breath. He held that breath for several long moments, merely letting it absorb into his being and relax him again. It almost worked and as he let out an equally sharp exhale, he felt a poke to his neck. Ashenflight didn't budge, but instead laid there listening to the breathing of himself and the other cat. The voice did little to stir him from his position either. But the felt a chuckle build inside of him and catch in his throat. I probably look like an idiot, laying here in the dirt with my face stuffed into it. Strangely though? It's rather comfortable. Relaxing almost. But he couldn't tell that to Rabbitwind. So he instead just let the silence linger between them as he thought up a more... acceptable answer.
♦ ♦ ♦ He parted his maw and mumbled against the dirt, word slurred and softer than in his usual gruff voice. 'Thinking." It was only one word, but he knew for Rabbitwind it would have to do. Most cats knew that once Ashenflight had decided that was the end of the conversation it was all there was. Now sure Rabbitwind had a tendency to push a little harder than most cats, but he wouldn't let him. Can't let him in, he'd think I was a freak too. He'd leave like pa did. And dad... the core of all this tom's issues. He had felt betrayed by their father from an early age and seeing it affect their mother had only made his bitterness toward the tom who had fathered far, far worse. But there was no sense in trying to explain his frustration. He'd always felt he'd had to be strong when dad left, always had to be the one that mom could turn to when she needed it. After all, he was the eldest tom and had to protect the family. Yeah... the family. Protect them. Look how well I did with that. Doveheart nearly was killed by a badger and Rabbitwind suffers nightmares. Good job, Ashenflight, how damn proud would dad be? And all this time, Ashenflight had still not moved from his face-in-dirt position. "Running again?" His voice sounded... different. Not so much stern in his usual way but rather caring. Or as caring as he could muster up without sounding too concerned.
♦ ♦ ♦ His tail slowly twitched back and forth behind him on the ground, his legs sprawled out around him. He literally look like he was splatted against the ground and he was certain to anyone's perspective it would be funny. But funny wasn't his kind of thing. Actually, funny was far from his kind of thing. He didn't like jokes, didn't like pokes at egos, wouldn't stand it. There were a few occasional times where he'd been known to laugh if the timing was practically perfect, but other than that, Ashenflight showed no interest in the cats around him. While he cared deeply for his family and even a few of his clan mates which he had come to call friends, it was because he felt he had to. He felt it was part of a responsibility. Sure, in some aspects it was, but for Ashenflight it was literally the only reason why he stayed here. The tom was so independent sometimes that he wanted nothing more than to be alone, to head to the loner lands and find his own slice of paradise. But he knew it would never happen because he wanted to be here, even if it was way deep down, so deep that no one could see it without squinting their eyes and tilting their head a little, he wanted to be there. There were just communication errors and he had problems showing it. He slowly took in another deep breath and held it for as long as he possibly could. His flanks heaved so hard that he was practically about to get sick when he let out that gasp of air. But he didn't care. Anything to know you're alive.

As confident as Rabbitwind was, there was always one thing he could never attempt himself to do, and that was his brother. Everything about his brother really - understanding him, speaking to him, bonding with him.. Practically anything. It had just seemed like Ashenflight had never liked him much. Even though Rabbitwind knew that wasn't true, it still bothered him. He knew Ashenflight couldn't help it; he was never the lovey dovey type. And that was okay, every cat is different, but maybe an inch of emotion..? Maybe a hello, or a hey, or even a small nod to just acknowledge him? It was frustrating.
Despite their differences, Rabbitwind never gave up on trying to establish a connection. They were brothers! He would never give up on Ashenflight. Rabbitwind nodded at his question, even though Ashenflight could not see him. "Of course" his answer was simple.
The cream colored cat stared down confusedly at the sprawled out cat. Why would any cat want to just lay there? Extremely painful looking.. Rabbitwind cocked his head at the reply. He wasn't surprised by it, though. A one word answer was something common of Ashenflight. Rabbitwind smiled. "That's a funny way to think.." the lean warrior poked another paw at his brother. "Come on, get up. Let's go for a run" for some reason, Rabbitwind felt like taking a shot in the dark.
Why not? He knew he would be instantly shot down, but like I said, he never stopped trying. Anything, really. All he needed was a little effort. It was disappointment time after time, and Rabbitwind was at the point where he wasn't going to take a no for an answer. "Race me. I'll go easy" joked the speedy cat, tapping his paw repeatedly. He was ready to go. He hoped his brother wouldn't turn him down, even though it was a typical response.
What was it, really, that separated them so drastically? The fact that they were different personality-wise? The fact that Dad was never around to teach them what was right? That he was never around to teach them that family should always come first? Or, even the smallest of things? The badger attack? The death of Rockstep? That could be possible. He knew the death of his mentor had punctured him deeply. But, that wouldn't have caused a separation between family. Would it? No. Rabbitwind blamed his father. Everything was blamed upon his father. Even the slightest, most unnoticeable mistake was his fathers doing. Rabbitwind misses a piece of prey running along the moors? Father. Rabbitwind forgets to bring the medicine cat some juniper berries? Father. Things that had nothing to do with him somehow found its way back to him. It wasn't as haunting as the badger attack, but still. It was there. He wondered how Ashenflight felt about it. Maybe that was the result of all of their differences. The fact that they hardly carried a conversation for more than a few minutes. But today, that would not happen.
Rabbitwind was going to change everything today. Urge a connection between brothers, something that Rabbitwind had needed for his whole life. Someone to guide him like Rockstep had guided Ashenflight. The cream colored cat had never had a mentor like that. His mentor was just a honest cat, and taught Doveheart and him, and then tragically died in the badger attack.
A few minutes had passed of Rabbitwind spacing out and thinking. He once again realized where he was and took another paw to poke his brother. "Come on. It'll be fun"

♦ ♦ ♦ As difficult as it probably was to see, Ashenflight cared deeply for his family. Not in the traditional sense of he wanted to show it to them every step of the way, or that he would do anything for them, but rather that he would stop anything from hurting them. He would lay down his life before their own. It was his job. Since pa had left, well Ashenflight had assumed it upon himself to be head of the family. Being head of the family meant doing things for the rest of them, it meant protecting them and laying his life down should the need arise. With a light sigh, he heard the words of his brother and felt his muscles quiver at the possibility of a run. "It is, I suppose." He thought about it for a few seconds, and then continued. "Not today, Rabbitwind." Ashenflight still arose from the dirt, shaking out his fur and taking a moment to lick his paw and draw it over his face a few times. He just wanted to look presentable after all.
♦ ♦ ♦ Ashenflight looked away from his brother, his face screwed into sort of a permanent scowl. He didn't smile too often and when he did it was such a rare thing that most cats thought there was something wrong. So instead he constantly made this face. The older tom looked away and glanced out to the moors, his tail twitching back and forth slowly. His ears twitched as Rabbitwind poked a comment toward him and he lifted his brow and turned back toward the tom to look at him fully. "Rabbitwind, I am not racing today." He rose and stretched his limbs out, kneading the ground before him and then padding slowly past his younger brother and tasting the air. He preferred spending his time deep in thought, the way he had before, or hunting. While running was a close third he did not like the idea of opening up his thoughts, feelings, and emotions to his younger brother. It just was a part of him that didn't really play out in the normal day to day happenings. So instead he ignored the feeling of emotion that he usually had difficulty feeling anyway and pretended as though nothing was wrong with him. Even though Ashenflight and most cats knew there was something he was hiding.
♦ ♦ ♦ The gray tabby curled his tail slowly around his paws as he sat on his haunches and looked toward his brother. Rabbitwind was always so persistent and often he couldn't help but wonder why. After all, all Ashenflight had ever done was push his brother and sister away. And not just a light shove either, no it was usually so hard that he often wondered why they kept coming back. It had all started back with Rockstep. While Rockstep had encouraged him to open up to his family - and in many ways he had - it also made him become more secretive. Ashenflight began spending more time with his siblings but his feelings were always off limits, training was always off limits. Anything that was ever important in his life, was usually off limits. And the thing that had been least okay to talk about was Rockstep. After the tom's death, even the mentioning of the word from any cat other than his kits drove him off the edge. Ashenflight had even gone as far as forbidden his family to ask him about how he was doing. And that isolation just got worse and soon no emotion slipped out. Not joy, not anger, not even sadness. He just was and that was all he would ever be.
♦ ♦ ♦ Ashenflight let out a soft sigh at his brother's attempts to convince him to race. Ashenflight knew that he hurt his brother by pushing him away but he always feared hurting him more if he were to let him in and let him know the truth. Ashenflight didn't want to be considered a freak... nor did he want anyone to think he was anything but genuine in his attempts to protect his family. It was difficult to walk a narrow line between love and protection. One side he just wanted to protect himself and his family and keep all emotion out of it and the other wanted to hold his family close and never let them go. To spill his emotions and let it them all in and if they left... well they could leave. He wouldn't stop them. Sadly, that was true. Ashenflight flicked his tail toward Rabbitwind and rose to his paws. "Where to?" It was all he said, but he wanted to at least try to make his family happy occasionally. If he failed them here and there, maybe it would lighten the blow of disappointment.

As his brother rose from the dirt, Rabbitwind couldn't hide his smile. What an interesting cat. Despite their differences, Rabbitwind couldn't help but love his brother. He hoped, somewhere, that Ashenflight felt the same. How could he not? They were brothers! His previous frustration with his brother had seemed to grow higher and higher ever since.. Rockstep. Rabbitwind had always vowed not to bring it up.. But maybe it would be good for Ashenflight. Besides, what good is keeping things cooped up for? Rabbitwind felt like a bit of a hypocrite at that thought. He kept the badger fight cooped up for moons, also vowing not to talk about it. So he was no better. Typical.
Ears pricked, Rabbitwind loved the words flowing out his brothers mouth. What had changed? Was this even the same cat from moments before? Either way, Rabbitwind wasn't complaining. It was good to see his brother willing to spend time with him. Though his brothers words sounded coated with unwillingness, Rabbitwind was still happy to see him make an effort. The one question his brother had asked him was all he needed.
Where to?
Rabbitwind flexed his long legs and dug his paws into the dirt. The wind of the moor whipped into his fur, but Rabbitwind seemed ready as ever. Besides, this was his home. He was bred for the moors. This time around, the sleek cat decided to challenge his brother. Not with his legs, but with his mind. Maybe he'd try to break down the walls between them today. Maybe they could actually become close.. Like.. Like real brothers. With that thought in mind, he gave his legs a long stretch, then shot his brother a long, sly smile. Who knows where this would go. Rabbitwind was just taking a shot in the dark. Truthfully, he didn't have a reply for his question. He didn't know where he was going.. But that would be the fun of it. With a small laugh, he meowed a single word. "Nowhere"
After that meow, he was gone with the wind. His long, creamy legs pumped hard along open moors, speeding and winding up and over the hills. He looked back as he ran, trying to see how far he had left Ashenflight in the dust.. Like usual. He didn't know where he was going, but that was the fun of it. It didn't matter where they were going, either. Time together was good time. Especially in this broken families case. Rabbitwind couldn't hide his long grin. Honestly, he didn't even know if his brother would follow him. It seemed typical of Ashenflight to just turn around and sulk back to camp. But Rabbitwind was unsure.. Today seemed different between the two of them. In a good way. As he raced along the moors, Rabbitwind couldn't help but have a positive feeling on the rest of the day.

♦ ♦ ♦ The truth was sort of a difficult concept for Ashenflight. Mostly because he'd been told to hide how he felt and who he really was for so long that it just didn't seem possible. That dragging those skeletons out of the closet would only get him hurt in so many ways. So instead he merely watched Rabbitfoot, thinking of when they were younger. Before he'd failed everyone that he'd ever cared for in the worst possible way. He'd not only hurt Rockstep but he'd gotten him killed and by doing so he hurt Rockstep's mate and his kits. Ashenflight had become friends with all of them since that had happened, taking a silent vow to keep them all safe - the way Rockstep had. But as if it were not enough to hurt just one family, he hurt two in the process. He'd practically forgotten about Doveheart and Rabbitwind and their mother. He was so busy and concerned with Rockstep's family that he'd forgotten about them. Until - that is - when Dovepaw was attacked. Then he ran as fast as his legs would carry him to save her. But the guilt had never gone away. If anything it had gotten so much worse. Now, ever since, whenever he was around one family for two long he felt like he was failing the other. In every way... well in every way he was. At least that was how he saw it.
♦ ♦ ♦ Come on you mangy pile of fur, you need to get over your guilt streak. It's not going to keep either of them safe. The more guilty you feel the more useless you are to them all. And just like that, it got worse. He felt a stabbing pain in his chest but he closed his eyes and took deep breaths for several long moments. Forgetting everything but Rabbitwind. Right now it was Rabbitwind that wanted his brother back and maybe for just today, Ashenflight could give him that. The response was only one word, where they were going, and within seconds his brother tore off across the moors. The eldest stood there for several long moments just thinking that he could indeed turn back to camp now and race back that way but it would hurt him. It would make things harder to cope with. So instead he took several deep, calming breaths and propelled himself forward, after his brother as quickly as he could. His gray paws were large and crashed into the ground as he ran, he was rather graceless when running, but still very, very fast. Not as fast as Rabbitwind, but damn close. There would be a day (or at least that is what Ashenflight told himself) that he would beat his little brother in one of their races.
♦ ♦ ♦ His massive paws carried him forward, pressing into the dirt and spraying up little plants and clumps of it behind him. His tail streamed back behind him and a small smile flashed along his face as he neared his brother, but he did not let it show for very long. Only a fraction of a second, and then the typical straight line worked it's way across his maw. Ashenflight propelled himself forward and the closer he drew the harder he pushed his body until he was racing along side his brother. "Keep up, brother." He said quickly before running even faster still and past his kin. His ears fell back against his head, muscles in his shoulders and flanks bulging, constantly rippling underneath the movements of the massive tabby cat. Even though it had been a while since he had raced another cat, Ashenflight was always running. Always training. He had worked so hard to become faster and soon he would be come stronger in his fighting. Then he would be able to protect the cats he loved.
♦ ♦ ♦ Though truthfully? The only thing that seemed to cross the older tom's face was still the disappointment within himself. Even in his eyes there were times where it looked like all he wanted to do was cry. But he'd never once acted upon that notion. Not even the day Rockstep died. He had not cried. He had mourned, he had been sorry, felt so much guilt that it nearly stopped in dead, but he did not cry. He could not cry. He had to remain strong for his family and for Rockstep's. All in all, Ashenflight had wanted to give in to his brother's antics of trying to push his way in. Ashenflight had wanted to so desperately that he had nearly dropped everything the night Rockstep died and confessed to everything that had ever happened. But couldn't because he feared that Rabbitwind would judge him or worse, hate him, because of the cat that he was behind closed doors.

As he pushed himself along the moors, he was quite impressed to hear his brother close behind him. He actually decided to come! Rabbitwind was pleased to say the least. To Rabbitwind's amazement, he realized he would not be keeping the lead very long. He couldn't do much but watched as his brother zoomed next to him, meowed a few words, and was off again. He'd taken the lead. Rabbitwind couldn't seem to hide the smile across his face. Things seemed different. Things seemed better.
He'd let his brother win occasionally, but nothing was the same as this. He'd never actually struggled. This time was no different. No matter the situation, he wouldn't let Ashenflight beat him. No way. It was just the brotherly competition. He continued on with his big gray brother in sight. Rabbitwind would never let him get too much of a lead.
His swift body soared up and down over and around the moors of Hillclan, his yellow-green eyes fixed on one location. Ashenflight. His long legs pumped pure muscle as he eventually began to catch up to his destination.
As Rabbitwind drew even with Ashenflight, the same smile stayed plastered across his face. "I won't let you win that easily" he purred slyly, once again pushing his legs harder and faster until he was a bit ahead of his brother. It was nothing by far, but still enough to boast about. There was only one problem - Rabbitwind had no clue where he was going. The sandy shore? Back to camp? the cliff? He didn't know. The destination didn't matter. He just knew that wherever he went, he was safe. He was just glad to spending time with his brother. But still he should probably ask. Rabbitwind could go running all day, but he wanted more time to talk with his brother more than ever. "Winners picks finish line" he called back, though it was more of a question than a statement since this time he was so unsure who would win. Rabbitwind didn't care who won, he'd been having too much fun.
Something seemed to have changed within the few moments they had met each other upon the moors. It was as if their previous relationship had morphed into something completely different. A real, friendship. How the two should have been a while ago. He wasn't exactly sure what went on in the mind of that cat, but he didn't really try to understand either. He never did. The two always seemed to have such drastic differences that it wasn't even worth the challenge.. But now? Not so much. It seemed like a much friendlier environment. Hard to get used to, sure, but Rabbitwind wasn't complaining. He was just glad to be having a good time.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
the sun peered down at the pair through the clouds, it's golden rays could warm any pelt and bring comfort to any who saw it. well, any except ashenflight. the sun was only a bitter reminder of how the world could move on and leave one behind. it was that in part that drew attention away from the pounding paws against the earth, slowing if only slightly and allowing rabbitwind to take the lead. massive gray paws fumbled with clumsy movement and balance altered - nearly sending the tabby face first into a bramble bush. though was it luck or chance that he managed to clear the bush with a bound, muscles rippling as the bush tugged slightly at the soft fur of his underbelly.
winner picks finish? what was that supposed to mean? it is impossible to win if there is no finish. or maybe that is what rabbitwind wants. more time. a flooding of guilt soaked into his muscles and all effort he put into running seemed to stop and he slowed to a trot and finally slow steps. flanks heaved for air, sucking in the clean crisp oxygen with slow intakes and letting them out in slightly quicker heaves. you don't need to win thins, ashenflight. it's no use anyway. changes nothing. don't let rabbitwind think it will. a bitter voice reminded him of the nature of the cream colored feline and while it pained the cat to admit it he knew this could not continue for much longer. the longer rabbitwind was close the harder it was to push him away.
it's not always a bad thing. a softer voice whispered - so gentle but so life-like that the ears swivels and mouth parted to taste the air - to be certain that it was just the two of them out here. with a twitch of whiskers the thought was dismissed as just that. a thought. a part of ashenflight was certain he was not always alone in thought though. usually there was always two different personalities fighting for dominance - one that wanted the family that they had once been back and the other frightened and closed off from the world. as strange as it sounded, that was what he was. strange, weird, different.
while the tom was certain that he would not be alone for long it was enough to reset. green orbs grew colder - almost hardened as the large paws carried him toward the direction the two had set off in. that part that said to run wanted nothing to turn tail and flee the other way. to return to camp where they could pretend this had never happened. but there was that need to prevent himself from harming his younger sibling even though he ached to rip himself away from the world and hide away.
"where are we going, rabbitwind?" he asked with a stern voice, knowing that the other cat had either stopped or was headed back this way. but any trace of the old cat had nearly disappeared in those moments alone and instead he walked with his head held high and gaze distanced. they would not talk of the past, nor of the future. they would hunt or walk in silence. anything but talk. secrets only escape in moments of conversation. rabbitwind - 588 - c: trying a new writing style i guess.

As Rabbitwind drew further and further away from his brother, he heard the slow of pawsteps. The distance was getting further and further between them, just like their relationship had been from before. Or had nothing changed? Rabbitwind heard that stern and cold voice return to his brother. Rabbitwind stopped dead in his tracks and turned to see his brother. What in the world is he doing? He gave his brother an odd look, a confused look. A look from before. A look from the times when Ashenflight wouldn't even give his brother a look. They had not came far. Things were not different. Rabbitwind was just blinded. Blinded by happiness and blinded by optimistic thinking.
His pawsteps grew quicker and heavier as he padded toward his brother, driven by anger. What had caused this? 30 moons of built up anger? The build up of never speaking to your brother and basically treating him like nothing? Rabbitwind had no clue, but he saw red. His ears flicked annoyingly and he narrowed his eyes at his brother. "Is anyone in there?" he meowed, mimicking the sternness of his brother. If Ashenflight wanted to be like this, Rabbitwind could try too. Maybe not as good, but he could try. He stared at him for a few moments incredulously before shaking his head and turning away, trying to break eye contact with his brother. What the hell was wrong with this cat? What had caused all of this between them?
After a few moments he finally turned again and felt a bit better. "What is going on in your head? Where are your thoughts?" he muttered, feeling guilty for his comment before. He just didn't understand. What drove a cat to act to distant? And it wasn't just any cat.. It was his own brother! That word should be used more loosely. Brother. Rabbitwind felt nothing like that to him. For a moment, he'd opened his mouth and let out a meow he quickly regretted. "Ever since.." but he caught himself. He stopped. He wouldn't bring up Rockstep, even if it was the last thing on earth they had to talk about. He shook his head, instantly feeling bad. "I'm sorry, okay" he purred solemnly, "You just don't seem like yourself today" but then, there was a moment of realization. Rabbitwind wouldn't know if Ashenflight seemed like himself.. Because, well.. He didn't know him. He inched closer to his brother, keeping his green-yellow gaze focused on him. "Why don't you just talk to me? Tell me what's on your mind? I am your brother. You can tell me anything"
After that, he had nothing left to say. He expected Ashenflight to do what he always did - just turn and leave. Maybe he would be proven differently this time. Rabbitwind hadn't a clue. He turned away from his brother, not wanting to see him leave.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
It was no surprise that Rabbitwind was angry. In part it was what the older tom wanted. Anger was easy to deal with. Compassion was not.
The pawsteps that led the younger brother closer made Ashenflight tense and he stared with his shielded green eyes. Letting him in was a mistake, it was not comfort he wanted. it was me. the reminder settled in and took hold of his actions. the words that rabbitwind threw his way were too chilling of a reminder of what ashenflight had become to his family recently. he was nothing but an outsider looking in on them, saying and vowing he would protect them but happiness was too much to ask. but he did not let their eyes break contact - not even when rabbitwind tried to shake it away. when the cat looked back the peircing green eyes did not change, did not soften - just remained there. staring at him. watching and taking in the pain and anguish that he'd caused. some cats may have felt guilt over this - causing this for their brother. for ashenflight it was almost relief to feel the cat push away again.
but the words that rabbitwind produced were not the ones he wanted. they were softer, gentler. prying. no. instantly his body tensed against the pleeing eyes, the need to know. it was none of anyone's business where ashenflight's mind was. it was his mind and he was entitled to let it wander where it may. there was a reason he spent his days and most of his nights out here hunting for hillclan. because hunting was usually so... peaceful. it was sirene and it was filled with silence. even when part of a group no one usually spoke because there was only one thing in mind. prey. and prey needed silence to flourish. truthfully it had not always been ashenflight's intention to grow so distanced. at least not at first. initially it had been more of a want than a need but as time went on that craving to be alone turned into a necessity and soon anyone that tried to get close to him was met with glares and unkind words. even his family - though is words could be softened only a little for them - it was still nothing that a normal family wanted. he was nothing a normal family would want.
a new sentence started but it was quickly dropped. the reaction it had sparked inside of ashenflight was not a kind one. instantly his pelt had begun to fluff up and his eyes danced with a fire for the first time all day. he had been very clear not to bring up rockstep. painfully so. and usually every time the tom was mentioned it sent ashenflight into a blind rage and then a period of two or three days where he would not even return to camp and instead just drop prey outside or send it back with a warrior he encountered. then he would appear as though nothing had happened - as if everything was fine. and in reality it couldn't have been farther from the truth. "I don't talk to anyone, Rabbitwind. I don't need to talk to anyone. There is nothing wrong! Why can't you just get over your foolish antics and see that? I want nothing more than to be alone." It was probably a little cruel and while that was certainly his intention a part of him told him to stop before he did something that truly hurt rabbitwind.
but he could not simply turn and walk away. not this time. as much as he wanted to. he had to make it clear to rabbitwind that this was not acceptable. that he needed to just let ashenflight has his space - that what mattered first and foremost was taking care of hillclan. not the relationship of two brothers.

At this point, Rabbitwind was completely out of things to say. What was there to say, honestly? Ashenflight had been unwilling to listen to anything. He was so stubborn at times, and Rabbitwind couldn't stand it anymore. There had to be something. No cat just acted depressed for fun. The sleek warrior just couldn't seem to see eye to eye with his brother. It was disappointing. Fortunately, Rabbitwind could almost see right through it. There was no way. It wasn't possible for a cat to not want friends, or better yet, a brother. It just wasn't possible.
The white warrior narrowed his eyes at his brother, a flash of anger in his greenish orbs. He couldn't take this anymore. Rabbitwind shook his head with frustration. "No, you're lying. There's no way" he growled, not daring to break eye contact with his brother. The usual, joking and happy Rabbitwind was now gone and replaced with something much more sinister. No longer was he smiling or hopeful for the future between the two. Now, he was just blinded by his brothers lies. "That makes no sense. You're just throwing yourself a pity party. That's foolish" he was so tempted to turn away and run off into the forest, but managed to stop himself. He just wanted this all to stop. There was nothing more he wanted than for the two to be able to see eye to eye and work as a team, like two brothers should. But now, that seemed near impossible. So many walls and barriers had been built up between the two that they were nearly impenetrable.
Frustration continued to build up inside of Rabbitwind, building and building. The young warrior couldn't seem to find a way to simmer down. He'd never experienced this type of anger inside of him before, and was unsure of how to deal with it. Maybe it was from hiding all of this in all of the time, and now that he had let it out, well, he realized he was more angry than he thought. Moons of denying things always made things worse and worse. Rabbitwind was just now seeing the consequences of that. He almost wanted to laugh. The fact that he had been so stupid in chasing something that was already long gone. He stood there foolishly and stared at the cat whom he thought to be his brother. But that's not what he was. A brother was someone who stood by your side, helped you through it all and even more. That was not evident in Ashenflight. Not one bit.
Rabbitwind was willing to make one last attempt at connection with his brother, and if he got nothing, that would be it. He would simply give up and just break off everything. Not like it could get any worse than it already was, right? Rabbitwind looked away from his brother and down at the ground. He couldn't force himself to look at Ashenflight any longer, it was far too difficult. His final words came out in a choked, nervous tone. "You know, I'm your brother. We're supposed to be close. You're supposed to be able to tell me everything. It's not supposed to be like this" he had managed those final words with great difficulty, but after that there was nothing left in him.
The white warrior stood, frozen in time, with his long head hanging toward the ground of the moors. He didn't dare pick his head up. He no longer had the courage to. It had taken too much of a toll on him.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
muscles tensed as the brother grew taller, holding his head high and puffing his chest out as if to present the front that he was older and knew better. but his words did not ring of comfort this time. instead his eyes were dark... cruel almost as he looked upon the creme colored tom that called himself kin. "no rabbitfoot, you are wrong. you cannot fathom what you do not experience, and that is fine. but do not, for one second, try to tell me how i think and feel and what i believe." His voice was gruff and he sounded irritated, the tip of his tail was lashing back and forth while his muscles seemed to only tense all the more. "you are more than welcome to believe what you wish, i will not stop you. but leave me out of it. i don't want this friendship you think you are entitled to because we are brothers." the term brother flew off his lips so loosely that it could have meant the same as any other word of little importance, but he did not stop there.
"father left, he felt no obligation to be there for us. what is the difference between a father and son and two brothers, rabbitwind?" the words were not what ashenflight had meant to say, not truly. he just wanted... no he needed space. he needed to be away from rabbitwind and if hurting him was the only way that would do it then perfect. it would be done, no questions asked. he would mourn over hurting rabbitwind later. but he could protect him better this way. no way to get close meant no way to get hurt. the pain of being pushed away would be there for awhile, but it would pass. just as the pain of losing rockstep had passed. sure it still affected him but he did not dwell. instead he threw himself as hard as he could into the duties of a warrior - whatever they may have been. the tabby turned slowly after speaking, but paused for only a moment when Rabbitwind spoke again.
the appearance of his brother did leave a pang of guilt seeded deeply within his heart. the defeat that rippled from the younger cat did make him wish he could just keep his mouth shut. almost. "no, rabbitwind. it's not."
and with that, the gray tabby turned away again, his paws leading him off in the opposite direction of camp. toward the pond. where amends had to be made. ashenflight needed to return to the place where he'd spent countless days with rockstep because it was the only way things would move on. the only way the pain would end. it would take time, yes. but it could be done. and it would be done. alone.

If Rabbitwind had not been driven off the edge yet.. Now he finally had. This was the deciding factor in his attempts to make amends to the supposed-to-be-friendship. This was the end. Rabbitwind would go on caring, but not make a meow about it. He would take on an Ashenflight view on things for once. He couldn't force himself to look into the eyes of his brother. Yet, this wasn't his brother. It was something way worse. He'd been transformed so drastically that Rabbitwind had no clue who he was even standing in front of anymore. It had been such a waste of time. Rabbitwind was speechless for a long while, and stood there with his head facing down. There was nothing left to say.. Was there?
Father. Rabbitwind pushed the thought of his dad out of his head as quickly as possible. He didn't want to think about him.. Not one bit. Once again, another member of the family was now leaving. Ashenflight wasn't leaving Hillclan.. But he was leaving Rabbitwind. He was leaving his sister. He was leaving his mother. Everything. Rabbitwind felt terrible allowing this to happen, but there was nothing left he could do. He'd tried and tried. Eventually, Rabbitwind would have to come to terms with himself and realize that this wasn't his fault. It wasn't his fault that his stupid brother wanted nothing to do with the family. It wasn't his fault that Ashenflight would rather spend time mourning and crying over a dead cat rather than try and make things better. That would be a real way to make Ashenflight turn around. Bring up Rockstep. But still, Rabbitwind didn't dare.
Before Ashenflight was completely gone, the hurt Rabbitwind had managed to mew a few words. But this time, they weren't weak. They weren't whispered or choked with sadness. They were confident and proud. He couldn't continue to go on and blame himself for his brothers actions, just like his brother couldn't go on and mourn over a passed cat. It was a two way street. Rabbitwind now rose his head high and looked Ashenflight in the eyes. "You're no better than him. You're a coward" he growled, anger blazing in his green-yellow eyes. There was no better way to put it. Rabbitwind knew fully well that he didn't need to explain who the 'he' was in the conversation. He knew that Ashenflight knew he was talking about their abandoning father. But Rabbitwind was right. But Ashenfight was already beginning to pad away. Rabbitwind had not been surprised at all.
Now, the disbelief was starting to fade and the anger began to take over once more. He let his cold words slide out of his maw with ease. He didn't feel bad anymore. Ashenflight deserved it all. "So leave like the coward you are. Just like he did." the words were simple and cold. There was no need to explain anything. He knew that Ashenflight knew.
Truthfully, Rabbitwind didn't expect Ashenflight to turn around. He expected his brother to keep on walking away from his problems, just like he always did. Typical Ashenflight. In the back of his mind, there was a small hope that Ashenflight would turn around, but if not, Rabbitwind would simply return to camp and act like this never occurred. He would definitely be surprised if the coward turned around.

it's my echo, echo - is the only voice coming back shadow, shadow is the only friend that i have
truthfully, he doubted that rabbitwind would ever understand his reasons. the reason he had to leave now like this. the reason he had to push rabbitwind away and protect him from afar. but to rabbitwind this was just some cruel good-bye. it was forever. ashenflight meant it as everything but. he would come when he was needed but only when a threat to rabbitwind's life was there. until that moment he had to stay away because being close would only bring the feelings back. the feeling of having rockstep. that tom had broken the walls slowly that had been placed when their father had left and taken the pain away. he'd given ashenflight to courage to develop a friendship with rabbitwind and even doveheart. it had been a strange feeling but while it lasted felt... normal. well... normal enough.
and after his death the need to stay away returned. the need to protect from a distance came back and left all those around him with an immeasurable amount of pain. but probably none worse than ashenflight. it was he who had to live with the distance. who had to live with the guilt of those words that he had dared say to push them away. the hatred in their hearts that they wanted to convey onto him. and there was no one to blame here but ashenflight and his need to do his duty - to protect his family. that way should anything happen... should he fail or fall in that task they would not know the pain of loss because they'd never truly had him.
in ashenflight's twisted mind, it all made sense. it fit better than a jigsaw puzzle. it proved that he was.... that he may have been... could have been... should have been right. there was always the doubt and knowledge that maybe this was not the way to go. that pushing so hard would only leave him broken and destroyed at the end. but until the damage began to show he would believe everything was all right. little did he know the damage was all ready done. he was not all right. he just told himself he was because that was easier than asking for the help to repair his broken self.
rabbitwind spoke and it slowed his steps to an inch, then a crawl, and finally to a stop. but he did not speak. not at first. he just let the words wash over him. "not a coward." he whispered before raising his voice to a firm one. "that's the difference between dad and i, rabbitwind. i'm not really gone. i'm still here. and i'll live with my choice staring me in the face for the rest of my life. he ran from the memory." he did not bother turning around but instead just stood there, listening to the anger in rabbitwind's voice. he willed it to power him to continue to move. but instead it did the opposite. it left him immobile. beneath that anger was pain. so much pain. he knew... because he'd been there before. when their father had left, when rockstep had died, and now. when it was his turn to walk away.
"do not speak of things which you do not comprehend, rabbitwind."
how he wanted to assure his brother that things would be all right. knowing he was causing this pain the way his father had only made ashenflight tremble with guilt. he stood there with his back turned, muscles tensed and body shaking horribly. how could he walk away from his brother? what is wrong with me, rockstep? why... why am i this way? a tear started at the corner of his eyes and suddenly the pain turned to energy, fueled his muscles and the cat that had been shaking so violently was moving.
"just stay away. leave me be. it's for the best." his words were so broken, so pain filled. but it was not the words that should have gathered rabbitwind's attention. it was the distress, the sound of sadness, of frustration, of tears on his voice. and without a single word more ashenflight propelled himself as far and fast as his legs would carry him. he did not look back, did not dare. if rabbitwind followed he didn't want to see. rabbitwind couldn't see him like this. he had to keep running. so when he reached the pond he did not stop but instead leaped across the thinnest part of the water and through the reeds. they rustled behind him but that did not seem to stop him. he ran right to the border of hillclan and the loner lands and nearly fell on his face when he attempted to stop himself from crossing. he stood there staring past the border, wondering if it was worth it... if running now would bring him back later... if he could bring himself back later. it didn't seem likely but maybe it could happen... maybe.
the gray brute's ears were pricked, waiting for sound. but he prayed rabbitwind had not followed because then he only had run way to run. and that was away. rabbitwind - 856 - this reminds me greatly of a scenario in my own life. I don't think that's a good thing. LOL.
